Premiere: Heritage Link Brands

Ladies and Gentleman, brace yourselves. It’s time for the world premiere of a brand-new 90-second feature from Why Didn’t I Think of That?

And this is a good one. When I think of philanthropy, I usually think of giant tax-deductible donations to large charities. I forget that sometimes we can actually help people in other ways than writing a check. That’s what Selena Cuffe did. Cuffe recognized an entire segment of the South African wine industry that was struggling, floundering under the residual oppression of apartheid. So she decided to do something that many of us forget is even an option: help people and make money.

Her company, Heritage Link Brands, promotes the black vineyards and wine makers of South Africa. Even though the population of South Africa is 80% black, they make less than 2% of the country’s $3 billion wine industry. Cuffe hopes to change that with her company. Hear her story below.

Sales are now exceeding $1 million. And to think, she only started with $70,000 in savings and loans. Within two years of founding the company, Cuffe was name Black Enterprise Entrepreneur of the Year.
