What they do:
Make lip balm and personal care items from beeswax.
Inspiration:
Roxanne Quimby met Burt Shavitz at a flea market where he was selling honey out of his pick up truck. She volunteered to help him store the beeswax. A book of 19th century recipes for homemade personal care products led to two putting beeswax into lip balm.
About the business:
Burt Shavitz and Roxanne Quimby began by re-imagining personal care products, using beeswax as a key ingredient. Burts Bees makes everything from soap to perfumes, but the big money maker is "Burts Bees Beeswax Lipbalm." In 2007, Shavitz and Quimby sold the company for $925 million.
