What they do:
Pioneered pneumatic (air-filled) tires for all types of self-propelled vehicles.
Inspiration:
In February 1888, British veterinary surgeon Jonn Boyd Dunlop wanted to cushion his young son’s bumpy tricycle ride. His family physician suggested filling sheet-rubber with air – creating similar to the air-filled mattresses used in hospitals.
About the business:
Dunlop developed and patented the first practical pneumatic (inflatable) tire -- which was a hit with bicyclists. By 1891, he was manufacturing 3,000 a week. Five years later he began making his tires for automobiles. More than a century later, Dunlop remains a leading global brand of auto, truck and airplane tires.

Luckily, many before us have made bold, world-changing moves that have dramatically shifted the courses of industries, and made the people behind the companies filthy rich. One such example is Apple Computers.
This entrepreneur invented a way to help his distressed customers — and start a new industry — at the same time. Hear the story of auto mechanic Ernest Holmes and the invention of the Tow Truck.
Why would anyone just let people use their product… for free? Well, for Connecticut clockmaker Eli Terry, it was a matter of getting his product into the hands of people who might not have realized they wanted it.
It’s probably the most popular carbonated beverage in the world, but it wasn’t always an easy sell. Enter Asa Griggs Candler, the man who would take Coca-cola from drug-store remedy to a brand recognized around the world.
Recently, Marc Newburger, one of the co-inventors of the Drop Stop, was kind enough to answer a few of my questions.
