What they do:
A water gun that relies on air pressure and arm pumping to pressurize the firing chamber.
Inspiration:
Lonnie Johnson, a nuclear engineer, was home tinkering with a jet pump and a refrigerator cooling system nozzle. Suddenly, a powerful spurt of water shot across the room.
About the business:
Johnson built a prototype and applied for a patent. He shopped the water gun to toy companies, but with little success. It took two years and $15,000 of personal expense, but he hit pay dirt with the Larami Corporation. Within a year, the Super Soaker became the #1 toy in the country. Hasbro now owns the company, but Johnson still does updates on the water gun.
