Tatango

Tatango

There’s money in “them thar” texts! Learn how a college student turned text messaging into a mass marketing vehicle. And found sales quickly approaching one million dollars.

What they do:
A mass-text messaging service.

Inspiration:
Derek Johnson had a friend who was having trouble sending news alerts to members of her sorority. Johnson suggested mass text messaging, but an effective resource didn’t exist.

About the business:
Derek Johnson looked for a way to help his friend out, but he couldn’t find one. So he did what any aspiring entrepreneur does when they find a need that isn’t being met. He made his own solution. In 2007, in his parent’s basement, Johnson founded Tatango. For a monthly fee, Tatango sends text message to all your colleagues, customers, employees or friends simultaneously. Within three years Tatango turned a profit and had sales of over a half million dollars.
